Introducing the GRIT Freedom Chair 3.0

We're pumped to announce the latest version of our award winning GRIT Freedom Chair: the 3.0. Featuring a pneumatic front wheel, this is the lightest weight and smoothest rolling chair we've ever produced!

The large front wheel is one of the most recognizable, and most important, parts of the GRIT Freedom Chair design. Its large size (9" diameter and 2.5" wide) helps it to roll over bumps and obstacles that would snag regular wheelchair casters. Its position in our three-wheeled frame makes the chair stable like a tripod, ensuring safety and comfort. We want our riders to focus on where they want to go, not what's under their wheels.

The GRIT Freedom Chair front wheel has to be smooth rolling, durable, and easy to maintain. When we launched in 2014, we settled on a cast rubber front wheel. It rolls great on a variety of different terrains and is virtually indestructible. However, we're not ones to rest on our laurels, so we kept our eyes peeled in case we found something even better.

And we did.

The new pneumatic front wheel included with the GRIT Freedom Chair 3.0 and available as an easy-to-install upgrade for older models of the chair.

The ridge down the center of the wheel helps on pavement. The width of the wheel helps on soft ground.

The new pneumatic front wheel on the GRIT Freedom Chair 3.0 (and GRIT Freedom Chair Forward) is inflatable, rather than solid, offering a smooth ride on almost any surface. It's almost two pounds lighter than our old front wheel, saving weight and enabling more nimble maneuvering of the chair down the trail. It has a smooth ridge for low rolling resistance on pavement and a round cross-section that spreads weight out to float over soft ground like sand and snow. It features sealed cartridge ball bearings for dramatically reduced rolling resistance.

Inflatable wheels do have one potential downside: they can go flat. One of our favorite parts of this new front wheel is that it shares parts with common mountain boards (think: skateboard that you ride downhill off-road, crazy right?) wheels, so the tubes and bearings are easy to find.

The new pneumatic front wheel is included with every GRIT Freedom Chair 3.0 (launching soon!). It's also backwards compatible and easy to install on previous models of the chair. Check out our upgrade page for pricing and availability if you want to just buy the front wheel for your existing GRIT Freedom Chair.
