The all-terrain wheelchair for riders with ataxia

The Freedom Chair can help you stay active, healthy, and unrestricted while enjoying the outdoors.

Individuals with ataxia use the GRIT Freedom Chair to improve coordination and strength, and maintain an active lifestyle. The chair is appropriate for riders with a wide range of ability—whether you can walk a bit or not, the Freedom Chair can help you enjoy the world that exists where the sidewalk ends.

Some riders use it completely independently, while others receive occasional or full-time assistance. Meet a few of our riders with ataxia below, and continue on to learn more about how people with ataxia use our all-terrain wheelchairs to get and stay active.

When word of this chair got around, I became a local celebrity. I’ve already done some hikes with people who happened to hear about the chair. I’ve made new friends, joined a hiking club, and been more active than I have in years. —Ilan

I am the caretaker for my wife, Colleen, who is actually the rider. Our wish is to share through our experience that it is possible to live a joyous life despite our circumstances. Colleen has owned a number of chairs, but it wasn’t until we got her Freedom Chair a few months ago that she was able to expand her experiences and see nature close up. —Patrick and Colleen

The actual engineering, off-road ability, and lever-drive system are awesome. There is a learning curve from my regular wheelchair, but each time does get better. I am taking it camping next week! —Chris

[Here I am] at Manasota Key Beach, FL, looking for shark teeth. Found some! My GRIT did pretty well on the sand, even without beach wheels. —Laura

Keep up with friends and family

It can be exhausting to keep up with others when using a walker or a regular wheelchair off-road. The GRIT Freedom Chair's lever drive takes a lot of the physical stress out of pushing yourself around, helping you focus on the friends, family, and adventure around you!

Heart healthy

The ergonomic lever motion is easy on smooth ground, give you the chance to exercise your heart and lungs rather than just your arms. Many GRIT Freedom Chair riders love the low-impact cardio workout.
