Squad Shout-Out: Accessible Festivals

Editor's Note: Our Squad Shout-Out series was created to shine a spotlight on the fantastic organizations we've met during our journey who are working hard to make the world a better place. Read our previous Squad Shout-Outs here.

Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.
— Confucius

Six months after Accessible Festivals' founder Austin Whitney was paralyzed in a car accident, he attended his first music festival.  For the first time since his accident, he was smiling and enjoying life: the accommodations at the festival allowed him to experience the music just like any other attendee. Inspired, Austin decided to use his legal education to work in the ADA Compliance department of the nation's largest festivals.

From the Accessible Festivals Website:

During the course of [Austin’s] work, he realized that personal interaction with patrons is the single most important component of a successful Accessibility program. Understanding the true nature of disabilities, and the corresponding needs that arise in a festival environment is essential for providing the ability to experience live music, regardless of the situation. Utilizing this “human element” philosophy as the core of Accessible Festivals’ mission, Austin applies his legal knowledge and personal experience with a disability, toward developing a better way of creating practical accessible environments at music festivals.
