Squad Shout-Out: Challenged Athlete's Foundation

Today's Shout-Out  honors the Challenged Athlete's Foundation, an organization that empowers the athlete in us all by providing universal access to physical activity and sport through global grant distribution, camps, clinics, mentoring and motivation.

It is the mission of the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) to provide opportunities and support to people with physical challenges, so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics. The Challenged Athletes Foundation believes that involvement in sports at any level increases self-esteem, encourages independence and enhances quality of life.

Challenged Athletes Foundation vision is to be a recognized leader in a movement through which physically challenged athletes are accepted and respected at the same level as able-bodied athletes, to have a great and significant impact on each physically challenged athlete served, and to reach out to the physically challenged community by providing inspiration, awareness and mentoring.

In 1994, an effort to help one man launched a global change in the way athletes with physical challenges are perceived and perceive themselves. Jim MacLaren was an exceptional athlete, first as an amputee and then as a quadriplegic. After losing his leg in a motorcycle accident, Jim became a pioneer, achieving feats that others never thought possible for amputees. Jim may no longer be with us, but his legacy lives on through Team CAF.

The Challenged Athlete's Foundation has been changing the lives of many for the better through their Access for Athletes grant, which gives grants to individuals with a permanent disability who need cash to cover costs in the following three categories:

  • Equipment expenses (prosthetics, adaptive & non-adaptive sport equipment)

  • Travel/Competition Expenses (entry fees, flights, and lodging for an event)

  • Coaching/Training expenses (gym membership, paying a coach or a personal trainer)

The Challenged Athlete's Foundation is currently accepting applications for their 2017 Access for Athletes Grant Cycle! Applications will be accepted through December 2, 2016 and you can learn more - and apply - here

Testimonials from Recipients

“It was a lot of filling out paperwork! It was a little me being worried tracking down the documents, but that ended up being easier than I thought . . . For someone who is not an athlete, find someone who is professional who can speak for you and say, ‘Yes they are going to get out and use this.’

”I was surprised I was able to get the grant because I am not an athlete. I don’t do sports at all. They give grants to people who just want to actively engage with their world . . .They said this is going to happen and then it happened!”

“The Challenged Athletes Foundation awarded Ollie a grant for the Freedom chair, for which we remain grateful—it has been a game-changer.” -Jennifer Drew (Ollie’s Mother)
