Squad Shout-Out: Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP)

Editor's Note: This is the another installment of our Squad Shout-Out series, created with the intent shine a spotlight on the fantastic organizations we've met during our journey who are working hard to make the world a better place.

Today's Shout-Out  honors the Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP), an organization working to improve the health, independence and social integration of people with physical disabilities through sports, fitness and recreation programs.

"At BORP, we believe that sports and recreation provide a path to greater achievement to which all people should have access, and we continually strive to make this a reality.

"BORP is headquartered in Berkeley, California and is the leading provider and promoter of accessible sports and recreation opportunities for children and adults with physical disabilities in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to our high quality innovative sports and recreation programs, our expert staff provides advocacy, trainings, referrals and consultation services and have helped initiate adaptive sports programs in several other cities across the state. BORP also conducts disability awareness trainings and adaptive sports exhibitions for a variety of community agencies and serves as a valuable resource to physical therapists, rehabilitation hospitals, parks and recreation departments and related organizations."

"BORP is creating opportunities, improving the odds and changing lives. Through our programs, our participants develop positive body images, establish healthy living habits, increase their athletic prowess, gain independence, and take responsibility not only for their success in the program, but also for their own success in life."

BORP hosts the Bay Area Adaptive SportsFest! Their next SportsFest will take place on April 23, 2017. It will feature a full day of cycling, kayaking, and rock climbing! There will also be demonstrations of Adaptive Sailing by sailors for Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors! Pre-registration is necessary, and they are eagerly looking for volunteers of all abilities! Visit HERE for more information and to register!
